How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

The short answer

A private Tanzania safari costs roughly US$ 450–1,200 per person per day, including guide, vehicle, lodges, meals and park fees. Classic lodges cost about US$ 450–650, Signature lodges US$ 650–1,000, and Iconic camps or fly-in safaris US$ 1,000–2,500+. Season, flights and lodge choice make the biggest difference.

Key facts

Classic
US$ 450–650 pp / day
Signature
US$ 650–1,000 pp / day
Iconic
US$ 1,000–2,500+ pp / day
Typical 7–10 days
US$ 4,500–12,000 pp

What drives the price?

Lodges are the biggest variable, followed by season: the same tent can cost half as much in May as in August. Flying between parks saves days of driving but adds cost. Park and conservation fees are a fixed cost on every safari. Group size matters too — a private vehicle shared by four costs less per person than one shared by two.

Sample budgets

Indicative “from” prices per person sharing, in green season, for our signature itineraries:

  • 3 days Tarangire & Ngorongoro: from US$ 1,690
  • 5-day Great Migration fly-in: from US$ 3,450
  • 8-day family safari: from US$ 4,900
  • 10 days safari & Zanzibar: from US$ 7,400

How can I make my budget go further?

Travel in green or shoulder season, stay longer in fewer places, drive rather than fly within the northern circuit, and mix Classic nights with one or two Iconic ones where they matter most — for example on the Ngorongoro rim or for the river crossings.

Questions, answered

Do children pay less?

Yes. Park fees are reduced for children, and many lodges offer lower rates — or free stays for young children — when they share with parents.

Are tips included?

No. Tipping is at your discretion; see our tipping guide for typical amounts.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

The best time for a Tanzania safari is the dry season, June to October, when wildlife gathers at water and the Mara River crossings happen in the northern Serengeti. Late January to March is calving season in the south. April and May are rainy but quiet and cheaper. Zanzibar is best June–October and December–February.

How much should I tip on a Tanzania safari?

Tipping is customary on safari but always at your discretion. As a guide: US$ 20–30 per guest per day for your private safari guide, US$ 10–20 per guest per day for the lodge’s shared staff tip box, and about US$ 250–350 per climber for a Kilimanjaro crew. Tip in US dollars (notes from 2009 or later) or Tanzanian shillings.
