Ruaha

Ruaha National Park covers 20,226 km² of central Tanzania, one of the largest national parks in East Africa. The Great Ruaha River draws great numbers of elephant, buffalo and predators, and the wider landscape is thought to hold around a tenth of the world’s remaining lions.

Ruaha sees a fraction of the north’s visitors. Expect baobab-dotted hills, greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, wild dog packs and camps where you can walk with an armed ranger. Pair it with Nyerere by light aircraft for a two-park southern circuit.

Ruaha: your questions

Is Ruaha better than the Serengeti?

It is different. Ruaha has no migration, but it offers huge predator numbers, rare antelope and real solitude. Many returning travellers prefer it; first-timers usually start in the north.

When should I go to Ruaha?

June to October, when the dry season pulls wildlife to the river. Several camps close during the long rains from March to May.

How many nights should I spend in Ruaha?

Three or four. Flights are a significant part of the cost, so a longer stay makes the journey worthwhile.
