Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park squeezes groundwater forest, acacia woodland and a shallow soda lake between the Rift Valley escarpment and the water. It is famous for lions that rest in the branches of acacia trees, and for flamingo on the shore.

Compact and two hours from Arusha, it suits a half-day drive on the way to Ngorongoro, a forest canopy walkway or a night drive. Olive baboons and blue monkeys move through the trees while elephants browse beneath the mahogany.

Lake Manyara: your questions

Will I really see lions in the trees at Lake Manyara?

It is never guaranteed — they are wild — but Manyara is one of the best places to try, especially in the drier months. Your guide will know where the prides have been resting.

Is half a day enough for Lake Manyara?

For most itineraries, yes — it fits neatly between Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Stay overnight inside the park if you want the forest at dawn and a night drive.

Is Lake Manyara good for families?

Very. Short drives, monkeys and baboons at close range and the treetop walkway keep younger children engaged.
