Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera — about 19 km across and 600 m deep — and its floor supports some 25,000 large animals. It is one of the most reliable places in East Africa to see the critically endangered black rhino.

The crater lies within the 8,292 km² Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Maasai pastoralists live alongside wildlife. Time on the crater floor is limited, so we descend at first light, before most vehicles arrive, and picnic beside the hippo pool.

Ngorongoro Crater: your questions

Is the Ngorongoro Crater worth visiting?

Yes. In half a day you can see lion, elephant, buffalo and black rhino against a 600 m crater wall. Go down at dawn and it rarely feels crowded.

How long should I spend at Ngorongoro?

A half- or full-day crater descent suits most travellers. Add a night or two in the highlands for hikes to Empakaai or time in a Maasai village.

Where should I stay for the Ngorongoro Crater?

On the crater rim for the earliest possible descent, or in the green Karatu highlands for farm lodges, more space and lower conservation fees per night.
