Tanzania safari and Zanzibar: planning the perfect honeymoon

The short answer

The ideal Tanzania honeymoon lasts 10–14 days: five to seven nights on safari in two or three camps, then four or five nights on Zanzibar. Travel June to October or late December to February for dry weather. Fly between camps to save time, and plan one special moment in each part — a balloon flight on safari, a private dinner on the beach.

Key facts

How should we split our time?

Safari first, beach second. Two or three camps over five to seven nights gives variety without constant packing: for example the Serengeti plus the Ngorongoro highlands. Then four or five nights in one beach hotel — moving hotels on Zanzibar rarely adds much.

Romantic moments worth planning

A few moments are worth booking ahead because they sell out or need setting up:

  • Sunrise balloon flight over the Serengeti
  • Private bush breakfast or dinner under the stars
  • Sundowner on a kopje, just the two of you
  • Sunset dhow cruise on Zanzibar
  • Private beach dinner on your last night

Questions, answered

Do lodges offer honeymoon extras?

Many do — a welcome drink, a special dinner or an upgrade when available. Tell us it is your honeymoon and we will make sure every lodge knows.

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

The best time for a Tanzania safari is the dry season, June to October, when wildlife gathers at water and the Mara River crossings happen in the northern Serengeti. Late January to March is calving season in the south. April and May are rainy but quiet and cheaper. Zanzibar is best June–October and December–February.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

A private Tanzania safari costs roughly US$ 450–1,200 per person per day, including guide, vehicle, lodges, meals and park fees. Classic lodges cost about US$ 450–650, Signature lodges US$ 650–1,000, and Iconic camps or fly-in safaris US$ 1,000–2,500+. Season, flights and lodge choice make the biggest difference.
